CRON Systems-A defence start-up into protecting our border security

Posted by P. Charitha on July 18th 2017

CRON Systems is a disruptive IoT start-up in  the border defence space, developing state-of-the-art intrusion detection systems that implement the latest technologies and designs at a fraction of the cost of other leading products in that area. Their initial product - the KV product line powered by Infrared and Laser, offers all terrain-all weather breach notification systems. It has completed a pilot project with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and has been well received by them and is  on the verge of preparing for its first supply orders.
Currently, CRON System is working on its next product line - Automated Drones and Smart Fencing - that will add an additional layer of defence to our nation’s borders and critical facilities.
CRON’s Journey in the Defence sector
But the journey hasn’t been an easy one for this defence-focussed IoT start-up. Founded in 2015 by Tushar Chhabra(26)- the co-founder and CEO  , Gurgaon -based CRON Systems was set up after he realized that India had no indigenous  technology to solve the simple fencing problems that could be affordable and  save civilian and soldiers lives  in the border areas. The ones available internationally were either too complex or too expensive apart from the monopoly of a few established defence companies. So to solve this problem he quit his job at Fourthlion Technology (part of the Nandan Nilekani campaign) and started CRON systems.
CRON team
His childhood friend Farheen who had great sales experience with the defence clients ,Saurav a renowned Tech architect at Grey Orange and Feeroz who was his partner and tech advisor in his previous company, joined him in this project of setting up a hardcore defence start-up. He was later joined by Tommy Katzenellenboge, a senior Israeli Airforce pilot turned VC( also his mentor for 3 years), who joined as the chief strategist and co-founder.  Fortunately for CRON, it got funding from YourNest, an early-stage investment firm in January 2017. And more recently, CRON partnered with an Israeli company Automotive Robotic Industry Ltd. (ARI) for integrated border security solutions. CRON sees IoT applications in defence achieving what no one had imagined. Reduction of the number of lives that are lost at borders across the world and potential returns on investment for what may now be seen as expensive products will make fully automated border patrol a “game-changer”. Some of these have also been adapted for commercial markets.
Future Plans
Along with its partner ARI, CRON is working on projects like a “completely autonomous laser wall” at Germany’s Munich airport. His team is also working on a prototype for a driverless truck, which could be used by the Army to fetch troops back from enemy land or for operations in other hostile locations. The fully functional product will be available early next year. The company’s R&D centre based in California will focus on envisioning what the company will be working on five years from now, though they plan to keep their production and assembly facilities in India.
