The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has given in-principle approval for a government-run reality show on the lines of the popular American TV programme Shark Tank, to promote start-up culture in the country, according to report published recently in the Indian Express. The programme, to be simultaneously broadcast on Doordarshan, a private general entertainment channel, radio and digital platforms, would have startups pitch to a panel of investors for on-the-spot investments. DIPP Secretary Mr.Ramesh Abhishek is learnt to have accorded his in-principle approval on March 4,2017.

The concept was mooted in August last year, where DIPP had shared the idea of having a program where entrepreneurs would have  pitch their ideas to a panel of judges that should be modelled on solving existing industry problems.  Also, a TV channel dedicated to startups was there in the pipeline, for which DIPP had written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Other start-up related shows are: The Vault-a reality TV series launched for SME’s, student community, and start-ups (season 1 is over and season 2 is yet to start) TVF Pitchers, Hauslay Ki Udaan (2nd seson kickstarted), The Indian Startup Show, Baked, and ShaadiBoys.

On November 9 last year, at a meeting to discuss issues related to the show, the stakeholders decided that the finalists will be given a reward of Rs 10 lakhs each and a follow-up events would be conducted to sustain the momentum of the program and “success stories and videos educating about the start-up ecosystem & culture etc will be promoted to ‘seed’ the show before it was launched.
