Posted by P. Charitha on October 5th 2016

For the past two years   Mr. Ratan Naval Tata , the 78-year-old Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons Ltd. has invested in more than  35 startups through his  RNT Associates, a platform for several of Ratan Tata’s initiatives and investments. The latest 36th being GOQii - a wearable devices startup launched by Vishal Gondal, who had earlier founded Indiagames.  The US-based company had earlier raised $13.4 million in a Series A funding in November 2015.It recently launched a fitness band and integrating doctors and health services as part of its plans to establish itself as a preventive healthcare company.

Mr.Ratan Tata, has invested in a number of Indian and global startups including  firms like Snapdeal, Kaaryah, Urban Ladder, Bluestone, CarDekho, Sabse Technologies, Xiaomi, Ola, DogSpot.in, Tracxn, CashKaro, LensKart and NestAway, Crayon Data, Moglix and SnapBizz, FirstCry and Teabox etc. Tata’s most recent investments in June, where he backed gaming startup MadRat and mobile security startup Appknox in August & a food tech startup Idea Chakki in September.

So what are his criteria for investing in Start-ups?

1. First the Team should make a good impression
2. The concept should be exciting
3. What does he feel about the founder?
4. Are they only in it for a short term?
5. Are they passionate about their sector?
6. He is a very numbers-driven person
7. It can be in any sector - Internet to IT, retail, gaming, social enterprise, furniture healthcare, food, manufacturing etc.

How can you approach him?

Mr. Tata’s investment decisions are independent of Tata Group’s business plans & he is also an advisor for 3 VC firms—Kalaari Capital, IDG Ventures India and Jungle Ventures. So you could get introduced through them.

The other way is to get introduced through any of the senior executives of the Tata group who could connect you. Not sure if that could be the case for small start-ups and those with zero connections.

This is the  best part ,if you think & feel your idea is truly disruptive & out of the box you could write to him at rnt@tata.com or
mail to RNT Associates located at 169B-171, Halekai Lower Colaba Road, Colaba, Mumbai, Mumbai City MH 400005 India.
There are fair chances of his secretarial team responding and there have been several instances where he did reply and asked for certain entrepreneurs to come over and give their presentation & eventually funded them.

How much does he typically invest?

Usually he invests around Rs 1-2 Crore , but there have been instances where he invested in Rs 10 lakh in Zivame, an online lingerie outlet and Rs 10 Crore in the online marketplace –SnapDeal. It depends mostly on the business model & impact.

There is no need to elaborate what you get if you have Mr Ratan Tata invest in your venture. Endorsements from the man himself, his industry expertise & connections, time, knowledge & mentorship!
