The Entrepreneur's dependence on 'Smart Drugs' to enhance performance

In a report published in The Hindu recently, talked about how start-ups founders & young entrepreneurs are getting addicted to “performance enhancers”, which promise cognitive benefits and improved concentration when they have to foucs hard on a complex task or work for longer hours.
In a city like Bengaluru which has more than 6,000 start-ups, many of these start-up founders are not averse to taking additional help to get an edge. Coffee ,cigarettes & energy drinks like Red Bull are  passé & easily the most abused substances. But nowadays a few young entrepreneurs are moving to performance enhancers that promise cognitive benefits and improved concentration when it comes to executing complex tasks or putting in longer hours.
‘Body Hacking’:This goes by the name of ‘body hacking’. Prescription medicines with agents like modafinil (which promotes wakefulness, usually used by security guards to stay awake during night duty), methylphenidate (to treat attention deficit disorder) and nitrazepam (for short-term relief from severe, disabling anxiety and insomnia) are popular drugs consumed by  these‘achievers’. The effects of the drugs range from increased attention spans that allow users to put in all-nighters while the competition sleeps to more mundane abilities such as focussing on the task at hand without having to worry about fatigue.
However, users dread the phase that comes after the effect of the drugs wear off. There are online forums where discussions on where to procure the drugs and which of them have the fewest side effects are shared and also how to tackle the withdrawals symptoms once it wears of!
In one case Raj ( name changed) a start-up founder who is forced to travel out of the city almost three times a week, has started taking tablets that help him stay calm and also sleep. He uses a nitrazepam-based tablet, which can be bought easily for around Rs50 (the actual price is around Rs20 for 10 tablets). Taken the previous night, before a meeting, he gets to sleep for around eight hours and wake up fresh. These drugs are normally prescribed for those with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and even narcolepsy or excessive daytime sleepiness. Vivek Benegal-Associate Professor, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, and a consultant at the NIMHANS Centre of Addiction Medicine, said that while the chances of becoming addicted to performance drugs is low, an abrupt stop can lead to withdrawal symptoms.Source:The Hindu
In a blog  called, talks about ‘ Nootropics ‘ ,which are non-prescription smart drugs. These are also legal smart drugs that can be purchased off the counter or online. Nootropics are all natural supplements that clear away the fog in our brains and allow us to focus again. Nootropics assist the brain in doing what it does. But if  the supplements do not enhance cognitive performance, it cannot be classified as a nootropic.
