The fall of the Vine

The fall of the Vine

Posted by P. Charitha on November 2nd 2016

With Twitter announcing the shutting down of its short-form video App The Vine, the question that lies in front of us is as to how long can these social media & live streaming apps and platforms survive in the long run.

Founded by Rus Yusupov who sold Vine to Twitter in 2012, it went on to become the No. 1 app on the iTunes App Store only six months after being acquired. There was a time when Vine had more than 200 million active users, and a movie “ Chef” was also made where the protagonist’s son uses Vine to promote his father’s food truck!  After 4 years it struggled to maintain traction and saw a decline in popularity in the past few months.

With heavy competition from other insta apps like Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube it has become difficult to survive. Vine hasn’t been on the Entertainment apps top charts since 2015. Apart from that the worldwide downloads of the Vine app has declined 55% percent in Q3 across both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

But the good news is that the website and app will remain online for some time till an official closure is declared by Twitter. So you can get a chance to download videos before it shuts shop!
