It is said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the nation on New Year's Eve, which is expected to be telecast at 7:30 in the evening. Though it is not known what the speech will be about, speculations are running high that it might be another set of sops for the farmer and the poor. Other speculations are suggesting that the tax slab is likely to be increased from a minimum of Rs 2.5 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier said that India now needs to move to a lower level of taxation to be globally competitive. With crucial state elections just around the corner, the government is likely to announce some path breaking reforms.

The prime minister had earlier announced on November 8th the government's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in a stated aim to curb fake currency, black money generation and terror funding had the nation reeling under a severe cash crunch.

“I assure you that this is not the end. This is just the beginning in our fight against corruption. We have to win this war against corruption and black money. There is no question of stopping or going back in this fight," PM had said.
